Grant gets new fire shelters for Twentynine Palms firefightersA $6,500 grant went toward buying the Twentynine Palms Fire Department new fire shelters that can be used to protect firefighters during wildfires.

The equipment is being presented Friday during a short 11 a.m. ceremony outside the Adobe Road station. The grant came from the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company program, which distributes equipment, training and educational tools to fire departments nationwide.

Firefighters use the shelters as a last-line of defense during wildfires.  In cases where the fire overtakes them, firefighters are trained to cover themselves with the shelter as the fire burns over them.   The new shelters are built with the latest technology and consist of multiple layers of aluminized fabric to protect firefighters against high heat for extended periods of time.

"Our firefighters deserve to have the best available equipment to protect themselves during wildfires," said Twentynine Palms Fire Chief Jim Thompson.  "Ultimately, this will allow us to more effectively combat the fires."

Climate change discussion brought to Joshua Tree National ParkA federal spotlight was on Joshua Tree National Park this week during a congressional subcommittee hearing to discuss how climate change is affecting the country's parks.

Eight parks, conservation and wildlife experts testified at the three-hour hearing, which was chaired by Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz. It was intended to be an information-gathering meeting to possibly help shape future legislation.

All but one expert said that global warming is a huge detriment to national parks, which already are showing impacts such as growth of invasive plants, a shift in habitat range of plants and animals, decreasing rainfall and abnormally large wildfires.

There are more than just wilderness refuges at stake.

Healthy parks help support nearly 6.5 million jobs and generate $88 billion in state and national tax revenues, said Michael Cipra, the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association's California Desert Program manager. A 2006 Outdoor Industry Association study said that outdoor activities like hiking, fishing and wildlife watching annually contribute $730 billion to the U.S. economy.

The most passionate testimony, however, focused on what is happening within national parks.

One study estimates that there may be no Joshua trees left in Joshua Tree National Park within the next century because fires and old age are wiping out the existing trees, and not many new ones are sprouting.

"Joshua Tree National Park without (Joshua) trees scares me. It's hard to imagine, it's hard to contemplate," said park spokesman Joe Zarki. "The Joshua tree is a symbol of the Mojave Desert. I don't know what would be left, but it would be somewhat diminished."

Woman sought in Morongo Basin home burglaries

Sheriff's deputies are searching for a woman in a series of home burglaries in Morongo Valley, Twentynine Palms and other nearby cities.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office has issued an arrest warrant for Jennifer Van Dyke, 23, who has ties to Yucca Valley and Hemet, sheriff's officials said.

A man she worked with in the crimes, Robert Charles Shelton, 28, of Landers was convicted of burglary and receiving stolen property this week in Joshua Tree Superior Court. He was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison.

Deputies recovered stolen tools, television, computers, firearms and household items during their investigation. Much of the property remains unclaimed, officials said.

Twentynine Palms woman arrested for insurance fraud
Teresa Turbyfill, of Twentynine Palms, was arrested this week for filing a claim on her husband's 2005 Cadillac last year.

In November of 2008, Turbyfill's husband Allen left the scene of a collision in his Cadillac, according to information from the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office.

He later told the Morongo office of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department that he had been carjacked and his vehicle burned by the suspects.

Investigators found evidence to the contrary. Allen Turbyfill was later arrested and is awaiting trial on that incident.

The day after his arrest, Teresa Turbyfill filed an insurance claim listing the vehicle as a total loss because of the arson. She knew about her husband's actions, according to the release.

She is also now awaiting trial on this incident.

Detectives arrest suspects in 'Mission Impossible'-style burglaries in Morongo Basin
During a one-month period beginning in February, there were two burglaries in Yucca
Valley, one in Morongo Valley and on in Twentynine Palms in which about $100,000
worth of property was taken, according to a sheriff's news release.

The break-ins - three of which employed the rooftop-entrance strategy - all took place
during the day, when no one was home.

The suspects would climb up to the roof using a ladder, punch a hole in the roof with a drill and then saw out a larger hole, said Sgt. James Porter.

Twentynine Palms Marine to be awarded Navy CrossA Marine stationed in Twentynine Palms will receive the Navy Cross - the second highest award for valor that a Marine can receive - at a ceremony on Friday.

Lance Corporal Brady A. Gustafson, a turret gunner from Eagan, Minn., is being awarded for helping fellow Marines fight their way out of an ambush in Afghanistan. On July 21, Gustafson and other Marines were fighting in the Farah province when Gustafson's right leg was severely injured.

Neverthless, he identified the enemy positions and continued firing his machine hun, which military officials said helped Gustafson's fellow Marines escape "the kill zone."

Gustafson is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

The Navy Cross is a high award for a Marine, second only to the Medal of Honor.

Elderly man arrested in hoax bomb threat at Morongo sheriff's stationSheriff's deputies arrested a 73-year-old man Monday on suspicion of calling in a bomb threat at the sheriff's Morongo Basin station.

James Anderson was arrested at his home in the 6600 block of Persia Avenue and booked into jail on suspicion of making a false bomb threat.

The man called the station at 6527 White Feather Road at 11:55 a.m. and told dispatchers there was a bomb somewhere in the building. The caller identified himself as Anderson.

He would not tell dispatchers where the bomb was or its type, sheriff's officials said.

Military police from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms brought police dogs to search the station and court buildings. No bombs were found.

When deputies tracked down Anderson at his home, he told deputies the call was a hoax.
