Seeing red (white and blue)

This Getty images picture of Big Bear marathoner Ryan Hall, which ran in The Sun on Aug. 3, drew the wrath of one reader who believes draping the flag is unpatriotic. The reader, a retired Navyman, says the newspaper was insensitive for allowing the picture to be published.

One nice thing about being in the USA. Freedom abounds everywhere. You are free to burn our flag or you are free to wrap yourself in it. Is it right or wrong depends to the individual and those who see it. Yes being a retired military person myself, we were taught a different respect or etiquette for the US Flag. But look around, how many are flown at night without a light on it? How many are torn and tattered by the wind? Should the SUN run the picture, absolutely? Does it offend some, Yes, does it make some proud when they see it, I am sure it does too. Thank You to the reader/Ret Navy individual who gave a big part of his life to ensure our freedoms to do and say as they please are preserved. I can think of many other flags he could have used yet he chose the flag of freedom. One that is recognized by everyone world over.

I think its awesome. Ryan is representing our country in the Olympics! I wonder if the Seaman wears a t-shirt with the flag on it? People need to lighten up...what is this the USSR?
