The age's most uncertain hour*
I've yet to meet anyone - Democrat or Republican - who isn't at least a little disappointed that neither major party ticket is missing the boat on the issues that are most important to all of us, most notably the economy. Today's news of Bank of America's takeover of Merrill Lynch and Lehman's Chapter 11 filing only underscores how precarious the situation is. My column from yesterday's Sun.

Maybe some of you will remember how the door on bailouts was opened for the Federal Government to come to the rescue to privately owned corporations/businesses. About 20 years ago, Lockheed of Marietta Georgia, was about to close. They had no contracts (commercial or military) to speak of and the military aerospace industry was not doing well. The political cry was very loud and ways were found to shore up Lockheed and the government kept it from going under. Slowly, other industrial giants have also called upon the government to save them as they did Lockheed. Now it appears that it is routine to the government to step in and save the corporations that are on thin ice.
