Baghdad safe for a stroll?
Sen. John McCain told radio host Bill Bennett that, "There are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today... "
I'm not in Baghdad, but I won't personally believe it's safe until the Bush twins take a holiday in Sadr City.

Iran gives us too much credit
Iranians are apparently incensed about the hit movie "300," in which Spartans battle Persians, who are portrayed as savage killers.
The Iranian government maintains it's all part of an American plot to build anti-Persian sentiment in the U.S. The only problem? I doubt if most of the people seeing "300" even know that Iranians are Persian. I'd bet money that over half would tell you they're Arabs. I've yet to see the movie, but unless an explicit point is made to connect the two, I don't think Iran has much to worry about.
In fact, a National Geographic survey in 2006 found that 75 percent of young Americans couldn't even locate Iran on a map.
If this is a U.S. propaganda effort, it's likely gone over most of our heads.

My influence on display
It was just last week that I implored America's young women to continue their care-free ways by frolicking in our nation's fountains. And, as you can see, they've responded with great enthusiasm.
These shots by the DN's Michael Owen Baker are part of a photo gallery on Miss USA contestants posted at DailyNews.com.
I'm glad to see the Antonella Barba scandal didn't hold these women back when it came to beating the heat in SoCal. It just further demonstrates the strength of spirit behind the Miss USA contestants, and the elegance and poise behind the competition itself.
Let me take this opportunity to mention the fountain at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, where I can sometimes be found getting my Starbucks fix. No pressure... I'm just saying.

It just isn't fair, or 'American' Beauty
"American Idol" has come under fire for turning a blind eye to racy photos purported to be of contestant Antonella Barba. Apparently, years ago another contestant got booted for a similar discovery.
There's been no confirmation that the steamy shots are of Barba, but if they are, something is definitely awry.
No doubt this hubub has Ms. Barba crying herself to sleep every night, ruining her perfect makeup job. She probably now thinks twice before frolicking in fountains or posing in glamour shots. If that's the America we're headed for, it's an America that's lost its way.
Reality TV claims to feature real people - and real people sometimes have skeletons in their closets. And some people have super-hot skeletons. But if we deny them the chance to compete, we deny the premise of the show itself.
So let's think about this long and hard, America. It was Jesus who said "let he who has no sin cast the first stone." And, to be honest, who amongst us hasn't frolicked in a fountain once in a while? Oddly enough, though, no one seems interested in those pictures.
