Debt ceiling gridlock puts unemployment benefits in peril

PASADENA
- As lawmakers in Washington, D.C. remain deadlocked over raising
the debt limit, a newly revealed threat looms for Californians,
especially in areas hard hit by unemployment such as Northwest
Pasadena.

According
to a report by Capital Public Radio, Californians could stop
receiving unemployment checks if Congress and the White House can’t
hash out a debt deal by the Tuesday deadline.

A
failure to do so could have perilous implications for areas like
Northwest Pasadena, which has been hard hit by the recession.

Unemployment
in the two zip codes that make up Northwest Pasadena is above 18
percent
, according to a Los Angeles County report.
