Paul Oberjuerge: Kwan Krazies Strike Back

| | Comments (0) |

Something about Michelle Kwan appealed to fans on a very visceral level. Anything remotely resembling an attack on her has been sure to generate angry e-mail from her more, uh, emotional fans. One journalist I know said "they'll come after you if they don't like an adjective you used." Said another: "These people will drink the Kool-aid."

Anyway, I suggested Kwan pull out of the Olympics the day before she did, and the hardcore responded. See a selection, below. (The items are uncut and unedited.)

I don't even know how or where to start. Your article reagrding Michelle Kwan's unfortunate withdraw disgust me. What you wrote has brought disgrace to your parents and all those teachers who have taought you in the past. Dislike someone is one thing, but to attack that person when she/he is in a difficult time is just absolutely disgusting.
With or without Olympic Gold, Miss Kwan will forever be remembered as the greatest champion and she will always be greatly respected and loved.
As for you, your article speaks for itself. Though I never met you--and I hope I never will--I can tell that you are cold, you are ugly and you are mean. You are nothing but a recycled garbage.
Shame on you!

That was harsh. Also poorly written. Sentences are short. Choppiness
shows poor basic skills. Give it up. Get a day job. We won't hold it
against you.

Mr.Oberjuerge,
When two young ladies in Michelle Kwan and Emily Hughes show more class, grace, and dignity than a grown man that man should examine himself.
Michelle Kwan began skating for the love and passion she had for figure skating. She's won and lost and treated both as equals exhibiting the same grace and dignity. She showed even more today her utmost respect and love for this sport in relinquishing her spot admist re-injuring herself in one of the most difficult decisions of her life.
She let go of a goal today that she's been working at for 20 years since the age of 5.
Emily Hughes is a bright young skater with a seemingly bright future and looking towards it. And amidst her joy of now competing she spared a moment as did her father to send well wishes to Kwan and praise her for all she has done for skating.
Emily has shown and is showing grace, dignity, and poise for one so young as similar as Kwan did when she was Hughes age not so long ago.
IMO, you could stand to learn from both. before you flippantly make a mockery of one's career and life and all they've sacrificed and worked for over the years, ask yourself, what have you done.
Ignorance from people like you makes it no wonder the golden age of journalism has so far been removed and seems to see no resurgance in the foreseable future.
Live, learn, and grow. At your age, you have a lot of catching up to do.Burt KW

Paul,

I wonder if you would've been as negative and
discouraging towards Michelle if she was white.

It seems to me that she had performed better than
Sarah Hughes in 2002 but it was given to Sarah because
she had the whole "young sweet American girl" look and
not for her skill. I am convinced it was the same
reason in 1998 Tara Lipinski won over Michelle.

However, Michelle displayed incredible grace (as she
does in her skating) and decided to step down. This
reflects her incredible character and maturity. I bet
Tara nor Sarah would've done the same. And certainly
you wouldn't have been as critical.
