Get this: On the LAST night of competition over at the figure and short-track skating venue, which I practically lived at the past fortnight, I tumbled to something:
The staff at the Palavela served canapes and wine to reporters, after competition!
Which means I missed, oh, about three bottles of wine in two weeks. Not that I drink, really, but still ...
The Palavela is about a 15-minute walk from the Main Media Center, which has more space and more amenities than the media sub-center, over at the arena.
So, after all those figures events (pairs, the dahnce, men, women), and all the short-track events, I'd get the postgame quotes, pack up my stuff and hoof it back to the MMC.
Meanwhile, my in-the-know colleagues were snacking and choosing between red and white being poured in real glasses by a friendly volunteer.
I might have gone the entire Games without knowing about this, but a colleague mentioned it on the bus ride in, Saturday. And there it was: After Apolo Anton Ohno got done spewing cliches, free wine and canapes in the media lounge. I had the red.
It wasn't enough to get a real Olympic buzz, but I suppose I could have gone back for more ...
Almost wish I never found out. Then I wouldn't feel like I missed something just because I didn't hang around the Palavela late enough.
