Steve Dilbeck: Love and kisses
And, no, they’re not all swell guys and girls.
Not to say the vast majority aren’t, but you’re so used to athletes being so excited to participate in the Olympics, that when you run across someone who acts like they haven’t had a bowel movement in 10 days, it can be jarring.
Take Australia’s Dale Begg-Smith, pretty please.
He acts like one seriously unhappy 21 year old. One extremely wealthy, talented, successful 21 year old.
Begg-Smith won the Olympic gold medal in moguls Wednesday. He is the current World Cup leader.
He looked and acted fairly miserable.
Begg-Smith has apparently made millions with a dot.com company that tracks the number of times internet ads are seen.
Asked what the name of his company was, he said: ``I forgot.’’
Wow. Said he mostly shut it down to concentrate on skiing. You know, like Bill Gates did.
The Canadian press wasn’t buying any of it, but then he doesn’t appear to have the best relationship with our North American media neighbors.
They seem less than thrilled that the Vancouver-born and raised Begg-Smith represented Canada until 2001. Then he moved to Australia, skipped two World Cup seasons, returned with Australian citizenship and started kicking some moguls fanny.
Hopefully, he’s enjoying it all.
``Look, he’s actually smiling,’’ said one member of the Australian press during the flowers ceremony. ``I didn’t know he could smile.’’
At his press conference he was smug, border rude. Though to be honest, a couple of reporters hammered him.
He gave short, flat answers. Refused to divulge most anything about his company. He did reveal he still keeps an apartment in Vancouver he lives in a couple months a year.
The Canadian feeling seemed to be this Australian thing was all a sham. And they plainly do not like him.
Begg-Smith didn’t smile once during his press conference. Doubt he partied into the night, either.
