Prep football post-season rankings

In my recent interview with Upland’s Tim Salter for the football Coach of the Year story, I wasn’t asking all the questions. Fresh off a CIF championship, the Upland coach, who is one of the most engaging in the Inland Valley, had a question for me.

“Why weren’t we in your preseason Top 10?”

A valid question, to say the least, given that the Highlanders lost two games by a total of five points this season on the way to a CIF title. Ironically, with one spot left in my preseason Top 10, I was debating between two teams: Upland and Los Osos – the two that eventually squared off in the CIF-SS Central Division championship game. I gave the spot to Los Osos, which seemed to have lost slightly less from its star-studded 2008 team.

Recalling my preseason efforts, or lack thereof, I thought I’d do final rankings based on all that transpired in the 2009 season. Not just a Top 10 but a slotting of every team in the Daily Bulletin coverage area…

First, my preseason Top 10 (try to keep the laughter to a low roar):
1. Rancho Cucamonga
2. Miller
3. Chino Hills
4. Etiwanda
5. Kaiser
6. Ayala
7. Diamond Ranch
8. Chaffey

I think this is pretty fair. I think that Ontario Christian and other small private schools are probably over rated. I would like to see them play some of their local public schools in non league to see how they really size up.

  • guess

You and I know that OC wouldn’t have a chance against any of the Baseline league teams.I have seen some of the kids on OC they are 1/2 the size of the guys from Upland.Nothing against the Private school boys but they are just on another level.

  • THATS NICE

I KNOW OC JV TEAM PLAYED CHINO HILLS AND GARDEN GROVE AND AZUSA AND BEAT THEM ALL, AND YES ALL THE KIDS WERE BIGGER THAN OC, BUT NOT IN BETTER SHAPE OR FASTER, SCOREBOARD.

Lol… JV team??? Upland’s JV team lost quite few games… Does that mean their Varsity team was horrible too? JV games don’t mean anything for the Varsity squad…

How does Miller not even make the final 32? They were bad, sure, but they beat your No. 22, Fontana, quite handily.

I knew I forgot somebody. Miller not only deserves a spot in the final 32, I think I’d put them at No. 14.
