Los Osos soccer playing true national championship?

The Los Osos girls soccer team is truly playing for a national championship on Sautrday. Well, if you ask espn.com, at least.

The CIF Southern California Division I regional tournament may have only included teams from one half of one state, but when Los Osos takes on Aliso Viejo Aliso Niguel at 3:30 p.m. at Warren High School, it will be espn.com’s No. 1 ranked team in the country versus No. 2.

Los Osos, which hasn’t lost a game this season, ascended from No. 2 to the espn.com No. 1 national ranking on Sunday courtesy of Westview’s loss to La Costa Canyon in the CIF-San Diego Division II finals last week. (If there was any doubt, Los Osos defeated La Costa Canyon on Tuesday in the first round of the regional tournament.)

Aliso Niguel was bumped up from No. 5 to No. 2 in the espn.com rankings on Sunday after claiming the CIF-SS Division 1 championship. (Los Osos won the CIF-SS Division 2 title.) While Los Osos also holds down the No. 1 ranking on MaxPreps.com, where Aliso Niguel is ranked 10th. Bas as far as national championship scenarios in high school sports, this is about as good as it gets.
