Hawkins to choose between USC, Stanford on April 1

Nobody else knows, not even his father. The question is whether Chris Hawkins knows what college he will verbally commit to when the Rancho Cucamonga High School cornerback announces his decision April 1.

What is for certain is the junior will narrow his 26 scholarship offers to one at the Nike Football Training Camp at Cerritos College. The two remaining schools in consideration are Stanford and USC.

“We were on the way back from Vegas last week and he just said, ‘Dad I’m ready to get this over with,'” Armond Hawkins said. “I think he’s just tired. He does interviews every day from when he wakes up at 7 o’clock until he goes to bed at 10:30.”

The younger Hawkins, a four-star cornerback rated seventh in the country at his position by scout.com, was set to commit to Stanford March 10 when USC swooped in with an offer the day prior to the scheduled announcement.

The process has since been delayed, but Hawkins has been doing his homework. He took an unofficial visit to Stanford in February and recently has been spending a lot of time at USC, including twice attending spring practice last week.

“He sat in on the secondary meetings and the special teams meetings,” Armond Hawkins said. “He did everything. It was just like he was a player except he didn’t actually put on the pads and practice.”

The Trojans had a chance to secure Hawkins’ pledge at their junior day Feb. 11 when Hawkins informed USC defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin he would commit on the spot if offered. The offer didn’t come until months later, Hawkins was informed by Kiffin, because USC was busy gauging its out of state options, Hawkins was informed by Kiffin.

Now it is Hawkins’ turn gauge his options one final time.
