Estefania Gallegos needed an unusual form of motivation, but the Carter swimmer landed a CIF-SS qualifying time nonetheless.
Carter swimming coach John Devries raced Gallegos against boys during the Lions’ April 10 meet against Colton with the stipulation she couldn’t earn points toward Carter’s team score. The greater goal was accomplished as she posted an automatic qualifying time for CIF-SS preliminaries, finishing the 100 fly in 1:03 behind the winning time of 1:02. It’s the only time all season she hasn’t won any event in which she has competed.
The senior who didn’t join the high school team until this season has posted personal bests of 1:01 in the 100 fly and 2:11 in the 200 fly as a member of a club team in Redlands. Last season’s CIF-SS Division 4 100 fly girls champion won with a time of 1:01.
“At tryouts I knew immediately something was different here,” Devries said. “She just needs somebody to push her and we haven’t raced against anybody good enough to do that. She’s so good, she gets bored.”
Carter has raced against only San Andreas League schools this season. The Lions final regular season meet is league finals on Friday.
