Despite having collected 20 strikeouts in the final game of baseball season on May 10, Western Christian junior pitcher Ryan Olson requested that he leave the game with two outs in the ninth inning in order for a senior to finish the game on senior night.
Contrary to reports here, here, and here, among others, Olson was not pitching a perfect game in the 6-0 victory over Calvary Murrieta and was not denied the opportunity to complete a perfect game by Western Christian coach Monse Estrada. The junior committed to the University of San Diego had allowed two hits and one walk, but perhaps confusion arose because of the fact that each of the game’s outs to that point was an Olson strikeout.
“It was Ryan Olson’s idea, as a junior, to let a friend of his finish the game,” Western Christian athletic director Nick Karavedas said. “It’s too bad that a selfless, humble act Ryan tried to do is getting criticized in cyberspace.”
