Goodman to narrow list, in no hurry to make decision

Rancho Cucamonga four-star safety Tahaan Goodman is no longer accepting applications.

Though he was still receiving scholarship offers as of this week, the Rancho Cucamonga four-star safety rated No. 2 in the country at his position by rivals.com couldn’t help but chuckle when New Mexico extended an offer that he could only guess was No. 50-something. Of course, it’s tough to beat the offers Goodman already has.

“It’s just too late for the Utah’s and New Mexico’s at this point,” Goodman said. “Thanks, but it’s just too late.”

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior said he would work this week on narrowing his list of schools to 10 or 15, but it’s evident that Goodman is in no hurry to make a final decision. His only scheduled official visit is to LSU on Nov. 3, the weekend it hosts Alabama.

When he strolled out of the weight room Monday afternoon, Goodman looked every bit ready for a senior season that begins Friday when Rancho Cucamonga takes on Redlands and UCLA-committed running back Craig Lee. Goodman has mentioned UCLA as a school he will seriously consider, but the Bruins likely have to show some serious promise in their first season under Jim Mora.

The hot pursuit of the country’s top uncommitted safety doesn’t figure to slow down once this season begins, if the shape he’s in is any indication. It doesn’t hurt that Goodman will share a secondary with USC-bound Chris Hawkins in what has to be the top defensive back duo in the nation this season.

“We want to win state this season,” Goodman said. “I’m focused and ready to go.”
