After 10 seasons, Tom Martinez ‘no longer the football coach at Los Osos’

Tom Martinez confirmed in an email Tuesday evening that he is no longer the head football coach at Los Osos High School. Coach since the school’s inception in 2002, Martinez led the Grizzlies to eight playoff appearances in 10 seasons, including a postseason berth in 2012. He will remain the athletic director at Los Osos.

He did not explain whether it was his decision to step down or he was removed from the head football coaching position. “I will focus all my efforts on the AD job here at Los Osos HS,” Martinez wrote in an email.

In a Baseline League that was consistently the best football league in the Inland Valley, Martinez led the team to three league championships during his tenure. The Grizzlies reached one CIF final under Martinez, losing to Upland, 19-7 in the 2009 CIF-SS Central Division championship game. Los Osos, however, hasn’t won a playoff game since, missing the postseason in 2010 before finishing third in the Baseline League the last two seasons.

With the Los Osos job open, there are two attractive head football coaching positions open in Rancho Cucamonga alone. Etiwanda’s head coaching job has been available since Tommy Leach stepped down in November after one season.

Tom Martinez’s career record at Los Osos is 69-45.
2012: 5-6 (3-2)
2011: 6-5 (3-2)
2010: 5-5 (2-3)
2009: 9-5 (4-1)*
2008: 10-3, 4-1)
2007: 8-3 (4-1)
2006: 7-4 (5-0)*
2005: 9-3 (4-1)*
2004: 6-5 (2-3)
2003: 4-6 (0-5)

Team was successful during the Bechtel era. hmmmm? Osos could have been great. SHOULD have been great. Had the talent yr after yr but needed to play as a TEAM. Had players that were destined for great things but favorites were chosen at expense of those hardworking others. Time for a change should have taken place a long time ago.

  • Yuppp!!!

Since the Etiwanda job has been open since November, I am not sure it is an attractive job.

    • ??????

Neither job is attractive. What wants to fight for third place year in and year out?

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Long overdue. That program hasn’t been squat since Matt Bechtel left. The engine that ran that program was no secret.
