PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Miranda Viramontes, Chino, Jr., Pitcher
Miranda Viramontes may have produced the same end result as last season, but rest assured, the path was entirely different.
It is a testament to the pitcher’s talent that she led her team through a playoff gauntlet to a CIF championship as an inexperienced sophomore in 2012. It was practically unfair for opponents this season.
Having not just a year under her belt, but a run through the playoffs chock-full of tense one-run games, Viramontes’ postseason performance in 2013 was off the charts. In the playoffs alone, the junior pitched a no-hitter and three one-hitters, one of which netted a 4-0 win over Lakewood in the CIF-SS Division 2 championship game on June 1.
The lone playoff game Viramontes allowed more than one hit was a nine-inning 2-1 victory.
“I don’t think this season could have ended up any better,” Viramontes said. “With my record and my numbers and where we ended up as a team, it was just unbelievable.”
Viramontes won 21 consecutive starts to finish out the season. She posted a 0.36 earned-run average during the regular season and allowed two runs in five postseason games. She finished with five no-hitters, six one-hitters and 15 shutouts. Chino coach Mike Smith declared he had never heard of a pitcher whose performance topped that of Viramontes this season.
“She improved in so many ways this year,” Smith said. “She always had the talent, but she was mentally tougher this year. It didn’t matter who we were playing, with her in the circle we knew it was going to be a close game.”
The only loss for Viramontes this year was a 1-0 defeat March 8 at the hands of Santa Ana Mater Dei, which went on to earn the No. 2 seed in Division 1. The hurler hasn’t left the circle without a win since. Viramontes has already led Chino to its first two softball championships in school history, but before she departs for the University of Utah, where she committed after her freshman year, she’ll be back next season for a run at No. 3.
“I think we can do it again,” Viramontes said. “If we have the same mindset as we did this year, there’s no reason why we can’t do it again.”
COACH OF THE YEAR: Mike Smith, Chino 
Topping last season’s heroics was a tall order, but Smith was up to the task. He led Chino to a second consecutive CIF-SS Division 2 championship in more impressive fashion than the first. The Cowgirls lost just twice, each by one run. The first was a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Santa Ana Mater Dei, the No. 2 seed in Division 1. The second was a 7-6 loss without starting pitcher Miranda Viramontes to Mission Viejo, the No. 1 seed in the division Chino claimed with a 4-0 win in the championship game on June 1. Smith replaced key seniors with four freshman this season, but that didn’t slow a program that has risen to lofty heights. “I knew we’d be good with Miranda,” Smith said. “But I didn’t know it was going to turn out like this.”
FIRST TEAM
SALINA GALINDO, Chino, Senior, Infielder
The third baseman who batted .443 helped Chino to a second consecutive CIF-SS Division 2 championship this season. The first team all-Mt. Baldy League selection was a fixture in the infield of a the team that went 29-2 overall and 13-0 in league.
CORRINA LISCANO, Bonita, Senior, Infielder
The senior third baseman hit .534 with five home runs and 23 RBIs for the Hacienda League champions. The first team all-CIF and first-team all league selection scored 20 runs and stole 13 bases for a Bonita team that went 23-7 overall and 12-0 in Hacienda League play.
KRISTA MANN, Los Osos, Senior, Infielder
The four-year starter at shortstop hit .456 with two home runs, 22 RBIs and 26 runs scored in 24 games. The first-team all-Baseline League selection had a .494 on-base percentage and eight steals for the back-to-back league champs, who went 20-5 overall.
DELANEY SPAULDING, Etiwanda, Senior, Infielder
The UCLA-bound senior hit .511 with 10 home runs, 36 RBIs and 45 runs scored for an Etiwanda team that came within one win of a Baseline League title. The all-CIF selection led Etiwanda to the quarterfinals, had a .571 on-base percentage and a 1.022 slugging percentage.
JANELL WHEATON, San Dimas, Junior, Catcher
The first team all-CIF selection hit .609 with three home runs and 39 RBIs to help San Dimas to a Valle Vista League championship. She had a .645 on-base percentage and a .967 slugging percentage for a Saints team that went 22-8 and reached the quarterfinals.
NATALIE CALDERAS, Jurupa Hills, Junior, Pitcher
The all-CIF selection was as good at the plate as she was in the circle. She was 16-7 with a 1.75 ERA and 246 strikeouts in 148 innings. She also hit .547 with 12 home runs, 32 RBIs and a 1.133 slugging percentage for an 18-9 Jurupa Hills team.
BRITTNEY VIOLETTE, Montclair, Sophomore, Pitcher
The first team all-Mt. Baldy League selection went 15-9 with a 1.17 earned-run average and 154 strikeouts in 156 innings. The sophomore also hit .409 with two home runs and 28 RBIs in 28 games for the Cavs.
MARISSA YOUNG, Los Osos, Junior, Pitcher
The first team all-Baseline League selection went 16-3 with a 1.65 earned-run average in leading Los Osos to a second consecutive league title. Young had 74 strikeouts in 114 2/3 innings in leading Los Osos to a 20-5 overall record.
MCKENZIE LONG, Los Osos, Junior, Outfielder
The first team all-Baseline League selection hit .539 with three home runs, 22 RBIs and 27 runs scored for the league champions. She had a .557 on-base percentage, an .803 slugging percentage and 16 steals as Los Osos posted a 20-5 overall record.
JUSTINE MCLEAN, Rancho Cucamonga, Senior, Outfielder
The speedy Florida-bound center fielder was an on-base machine, batting .580, scoring 31 runs in 24 games and stealing 31 bases in 33 attempts. McLean had 11 RBIs for the Cougars, who went 16-10 overall and finished third with a 9-6 mark in the Baseline League.
PATRICIA PARKS, Chino Hills, Junior, Outfielder
The first team all-Sierra League selection hit .426 with 16 RBIs and 29 runs scored for the league champions. When she wasn’t playing in the outfield, the Arizona-committed Parks posted a 13-5 record in the circle with 1.42 ERA and 130 strikeouts in 137 innings.
RUBY BARROSO, Chino, Senior, Designated Hitter
The first team all-Mt. Baldy League selection was the cleanup hitter for the CIF-SS Division 2 champions. Barroso, who played third base when she wasn’t the designated player, hit .413 with 31 RBIs for the Cowgirls, who went 29-2 overall and 13-0 in league play.
VANESSA TAUKEIAHO, Etiwanda, Freshman, Utility
In her first season, Taukeiaho burst onto the scene by hitting .512 with one home run and 42 RBIs for an Etiwanda team that went 19-9 and reached the quarterfinals. She scored 27 runs, had a .594 on-base percentage and a .707 slugging percentage for the Eagles.
