Pacers volleyball preps for Country Day

The next challenge for the Pomona Catholic volleyball team (20-11) will be a big one. It is taking on La Jolla Country (21-12) in a Division V State Semifinal playoff game at 7 p.m. Saturday in La Jolla.

The teams have nearly the same record. But don’t let that fool you. The quality of play in the San Diego area can’t be matched anywhere else in the state, maybe the country. So that teams has played a tough schedule with many matches against larger schools.

The Pacers won the Southern Section title, a first for the school in the sport, already a noteworthy accomplishment. That section title really is the dominant goal for most programs. Teams seem to get less fired up for the state playoffs and it is always tough for a coach to rally his troop a second time.

If anything, the rounds of state playoff games, for the few selected to participate, is really just a good chance for younger players to gain some experience and build for the future.

It won’t define the seasonĀ  it had.
