Los Osos baseball player discharged from hospital

The baseball field can be a dangerous place. That’s sometimes easy to forget. But the Los Osos baseball team was reminded of that on Wednesday.

Senior outfielder Matt Fryendell was standing outside the dugout when he was struck in the head by a bat that came out of the hands of another player who was at the plate.

The player went down immediately. He didn’t lose consciousness but every precaution was taken and he was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for tests.

He had a concussion but escaped further injury and was discharged from the hospital Wednesday night.

His team was waiting for him there when he returned.

“It was very, very scarey,” Grizzlies Coach Chris Romero said. “It could have been a whole lot worse. We’re thankful it wasn’t worse.”

The Grizzlies were scheduled to play at Alta Loma today. That game was postponed Wednesday night when the players’ status was uncertain.

No makeup date has been set but Romero said he’ll let Alta Loma decide that date since they were so willing to postpone it in the first place and it’s their home game.

Let’s all hope Fryendell continues on the road to recovery and is back on the diamond soon.
