Basketball standout Derrick Bruce of Colony High School has decided he’ll play next year at Oregon State but first he is headed to Florida. It’s not as confusing as it sounds.

Bruce, a first-team All Inland Valley selection last year, graduated in June but has decided to attend West Oaks, a prep school in Orlando first. Then he’ll head to Oregon State in the fall of 2015.

“I want to get bigger and stronger and work on my game,” he said. “I think it will help a lot before going and playing in the Pac-12.”

Bruce averaged 21.3 points, 5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.1 steals in helping the Titans (23-8) to a Mt. Baldy League title and berth in the Division 2-A quarterfinals. He had a season high of 40 points against Chino.

His postseason accolades include being named Mt. Baldy League Most Valuable Player as well as first-team All-CIF honors in Division 2-A.
Oregon State was the only school he visited. He also had a trip planned to Gonzaga but cancelled that after making his commitment. He also made unofficial trips to Cal and USC.

“I am very excited about being to compete in the Pac-12,” he said. “And I really liked the coaching staff at Oregon State.”
