Chino Hills volleyball sends message in Baseline opener

What’s the old saying? To be the best, you have to beat the best? Well the Chino Hills volleyball team did that when they convincingly turned back defending Baseline League champion Rancho Cucamonga Tuesday night.

The Huskies, playing their first match on that league after moving from the Sierra League, registering a 25-21, 25-6, 24-26, 25-17 win.  It really wasn’t that close as the host team led the three games all by wide margins.

The set the Huskies lost came after a 25-6 rout in the second game. They probably got a little complacent and lost focus while the Cougars decided they couldn’t go down quite like that.

Rancho’s Kylie Miller is the reigning Bulletin Player of the Year but Chino Hills senior Meghan Buzzerio tallied 25 kills and served notice she very much wants that award this season.

So now Rancho will have to hold serve when the two teams play there later this season.

No they’re not the only two contenders but they do seem like the best of the lost by far. Los Osos graduated all its top players and had setter Sarah Dixon transfer to Chino Hills so the Grizzlies are in rebuilding mode.

So is traditional power St. Lucy’s, which moved from the Sierra League with Chino Hills.

Upland and Etiwanda haven’t stacked up to the others in recent years and Upland graduated its marquee player who had been the centerpiece of the team for four years.

Chino Hills plays at Rancho Cucamonga on Oct. 23. The Cougars will be better and probably be a bit more determined. Stay tuned.
