Ayala High School’s Philip Afia made a verbal commitment to the University of Utah on Thursday, making that announcement via Twitter.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder is one of the fastest rising stars in the Inland Valley. He didn’t play football until his freshman season, and then did so primarily as a kicker.
It wasn’t until his sophomore year he started playing defense. He grew up playing soccer and had never even seen a football game before going out for the Ayala team as a freshman because some of his friends were doing so.
He had 10 or so offers from Division I schools to choose from.
