Mario Gomez out as Diamond Ranch football coach

The latest football vacancy is a little harder to understand. It’s Diamond Ranch, where Mario Gomez has been let go after just one year.

The Panthers didn’t do poorly. They were 6-4, but 2-3 and fourth in the Hacienda League which isn’t one of the best in the Southern Section but is probably slightly above average.

Granted there are behind the scenes things that a reporter isn’t always privy too. So who knows what really lies beneath the surface, if anything.

But letting a guy go after just one season seems a bit harsh. A coach really doesn’t even have his whole system in place. Depending on the timing of his appointment, he may not even have the coaching staff he really wanted.

Gomez was on staff under Roddy Layton so he made a logical choice as Layton’s successor.

Are the program’s standards THAT high that a winning record isn’t good enough? Maybe. But Gomez probably should have been given at least one more year before the carpet was pulled out from under him.

The school’s line is the old “we want to go in another direction.”

OK, we’ll see exactly where it goes from here.

One thing is for sure, it’s been quite the coaching carousel with Diamond Ranch joining the likes of Etiwanda, Alta Loma and Claremont as schools with openings.

San Dimas filled theirs quickly and who knows what is going to happen at Pomona.
