Etiwanda’s Dave Masucci notches 300th coaching win

Etiwanda softball coach Dave Masucci notched his 300th win Thursday as the Eagles edge Martin Luther King 5-4.

He has headed the program the last 14 years, also serving as athletic director the last four.

He got his start in the sport by accident. He was working at Claremont High School at the time and the then athletic director mentioned in a coaches meeting that he needed a junior varsity softball coach.

There weren’t any immediate takers. The stipend of $3,500 was then mentioned which was enough for Masucci to take the bait.

“I was just a young kid at the time and that was a lot of money,” he said. “So I’m like OK I’ll take it.”

He hasn’t looked back.

“I have loved the sport from the first minute,” he said. “I knew that’s what I wanted to coach. I grew up with baseball but never thought about it again.”
