BREAKING: Matt Dunn steps down at Damien for job at St. John Bosco

Damien High School boys basketball coach Matt Dunn has resigned after directing the Spartans program the last 12 years. He will take the same position at St. John Bosco.

“I am excited about this opportunity,” he said. “Yes there are mixed emotions because I love Damien. It (Bosco) has a great tradition of success in multiple sports and I am looking forward to learning by watching those coaches and seeing what  they do.”

Dunn, 38, was the Daily Bulletin’s Coach of the Year this season after leading the Spartans (29-5) to a Baseline League title their first year in the league. That alone was a significant feat given the presence of other competitors such as Chino Hills and Etiwanda.

The Spartans competed in the elite Open Division in the CIF playoffs and were a 60-59 loser to Orange Lutheran. But they were selected for the state playoffs and proceeded to win a Division 3 state championship, capped by a 70-57 win over Campolindo in the title came at Cal-Berkeley.

Dunn also served as Director of Marketing at Damien but he will not have to wear multiple hats at the new school. He’ll only have to coach basketball.

He compiled a record of 252-108 record in his tenure at Damien, with a mark of 279-131 overall as a head coach which includes two years previously at Villanova Prep in Ojai.

Dunn will move from one competitive league to another as St. John Bosco competes in the Trinity League, which like the Baseline had three teams compete in the Open Division.

Dunn and wife Joy and their three children, ages 6 to 12, live in Glendora and don’t plan on relocating.

“It wasn’t about the wins and losses it was about the quality of young men that came of Damien. That was more important to me than anything else,” he said.
