Tyler Merkley of Los Osos signs with Kansas State

It has been a good week for Los Osos track standout Tyler Merkley.

He also formalized his college plans, signing with Kansas State.

He followed by taking first place in the discus (181-1) and third in shot put in the CIF Southern Section meet over the weekend at Cerritos College.

Oh, he graduated too!

Merkley also visited Arizona, Brigham Young and Texas Tech before making that tough decision.

“I really liked the coaches and I thought that would be the place for me,” he said. “It was actually fun going to the schools and seeing what they had to offer. This was the best fit.”

Merkley actually plans on specializing in the hammer throw, an event that is not contested at the high school level in California. He says he has been training in that event quite heavily over the last year and is ranked No. 4 in the country in that discipline.

He has two older brothers that compete in collegiate track which is how he first familiarized himself with the event. His oldest brother Craig is a sophomore at BYU while another brother, Kyle, is at Riverside Community College.

He’ll also throw the discus in college.
