San Dimas pitcher Peter Lambert picked by Rockies in second round

San Dimas right-hander Peter Lambert heard his named called second in the second round (44th overall pick) by the Colorado Rockies.

Lambert, a 6-foot-2, 185-pounder, had said earlier in the day the Rockies were among the teams most heavily pursuing him, also singling out the Dodgers, Braves and Blue Jays.

“It’s really about where I thought I would go,” he said. “I’m excited, happy, relieved, all of those things.”

Lambert, who signed with UCLA, is coming off a 13-0 season in which he won every game he started and completed nine of those with five shutouts. He allowed just four earned runs and 16 walks with 113 strikeouts in 83 innings.

Lambert is the highest draft pick the school has ever had in the sport. The previous highest had been Sean Swedlow who was drafted in the third round.

“We’re all very excited for him. It’s a great day,” San Dimas coach Mike Regan said.

Lambert is also happy to go to a team on the West Coast. The possibility of rising through the ranks quickly for the pitching-thin Rockies has also crossed his mind.

“That’s what they say. I am just excited about the opportunity,” he said.
