Peter Lambert a state player of the year finalist

San Dimas senior right-hander Peter Lambert is one of five finalists for Mr. Baseball Player of the Year chosen by Cal-Hi Sports.

Lambert, who was drafted in the second round by the Colorado Rockies, had 13 starts and completed nine of those. Five were shutouts and he allowed only four earned runs and managed 113 strikeouts in 83 innings for a miniscule ERA of 0.43.

And that’s just what he did on the mound. He also hit .295 and came up with some clutch hits, excelling at shortstop when not on the mound.

The other four finalists are also quality candidates. They are:

* Chris Betts, Long Beach Wilson – hit .473 with 8 HRs and 29 RBI. A second round draft choice by the Rays.

* Joe DeMers, College Park-Pleasant Hill – Was 13-1 with an 0.51 ERA on the mound and hit .447 with 6 HRs and 44 RBI. Signed with Washington.

* Drew Finley, San Diego Rancho Bernardo – Went 11-1 with an 0.81 ERA and 131 strikeouts. Signed with USC, also drafted in third round by Yankees.

* Lucas Herbert, San Clemente – Batted .417 with 8 HRs. Was drafted in second round by the Braves.
