Here’s to the top individual performances of past year

Another school year has come and gone. There were a lot of great performances in about every sport.

So here’s a countdown of what I think are the top 10 individual showings. I know there are probably some I missed and I can’t really include everyone. I tried to get a lot of sports rep[resented.

So here we go . . .

10. Zach Shinnick, Soph., Damien track

He was the area’s top performer at the state track meet with a second-place finish in the 200 meters (21.10) and a third in the 400 (47.19). That even bettered his showing at the Southern Section meet in which he placed third in both events. He also anchored Damien’s 4×400 relay team.

9. Paige Halstead, Sr., Los Osos softball

The UCLA bound catcher hit .568 with 16 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 36 RBI and 38 runs scored. She had 17 multiple hit games even though opponents pitched around her. Oh yeah, no one dared run on her either. She is currently playing with the USA National 18-under team.

8. Jeremy Hemsley, Sr., Damien basketball

Hemsley was the catalyst of a Spartans team that won a tough Baseline League and went on to win a Division 3 state title. He averaged 22.7 points and 7 rebounds, earning first team All-CIF and league honors.

7. Austin Stewart, Sr., Los Osos water polo

He helped the Grizzlies to the Division 2 title game where Los Osos lost to top seed Foothill. Despite moving up two notches from Division 4 to 2 he managed 90 goals, 96 steals, 42 assists, 32 ejections drawn.

6. Shawn Wilson, Sr., Pomona football

Wilson helped the Red Devils to the CIF Mid-Valley Division title. He factored in on both sides of the ball with 50 receptions for 1,375 yards and 19 touchdowns on offense. He also tallied 104 tackles, 6 interceptions and 1 caused fumble. He is headed to Oregon State.

5. Josh Woods, Sr., Upland football

Woods, who is headed to UCLA, was a standout on both side of the ball for the Highlanders.  He rushed for 767 yards and 11 touchdowns on 94 carries. He might have been used more had he not been a full-time starter on defense where he managed 92 tackles, 11 sacks and 2 interceptions.

4. Leah Pruitt, Sr., Alta Loma soccer

The San Diego State bound star was on the precipice of setting a long-standing single-season scoring record. She had 37, one short of that record, then she sustained what was believed to be a season ending knee injury. Not only did she come back in a month, she came back strong, finishing with 41 goals and leading the Braves on a playoff run.

3. Peter Lambert, Sr., San Dimas baseball

You can’t do much better than 13-0 with 113 strikeouts in 83 innings and an ERA of 0.43. He had 13 starts, completed 9 of those, 5 of which were shutouts. He was drafted in the second round by the Rockies (44th pick overall).

2. Lonzo Ball, Jr., Chino Hills basketball

The junior guard did something pretty much unheard of at the high school level, nearly averaging a triple double. The UCLA commit averaged 25 points, 11.2 rebounds and 9.1 assists to got with 5 steals and 5 blocked shots. And that is against top notch competition. Any other year he’d be No. 1o n the list.

1. Tannon Snow, Sr., Chino Hills softball

Her numbers were simply ridiculous. She hit .569 but out of her 62 hits, 44 were for extra bases. So she had more home runs (28) than she did singles (18). She had 89 RBI, an average of almost 3 per game. The home run and RBI totals were state records. She also set career records in both.
