The Webb Schools football team made a lot of progress under Amahl Thomas in the last two years. It will find out exactly how much tonight when it faces St. Margaret’s at 7 p.m. at Damien high School.

Not only is St. Margaret’s (2-0) No. 1 in the East Valley Division but the Tartans were state runner-up last year. The teams was 15-1, losing the Division IV title game to Central Catholic 31-18.

Thomas welcomes the challenge.

“We’re excited,” he said. “There is no better way to find out where you stand and how far you have come. We have nothing to lose.”

The Gauls are off to a 2-0 start for the first time in 12 years. They also appeared in the East Valley Division rankings this week at No. 10.

Junior Wyatt Albert has thrown for 315 yards in the first two games. He played sparingly as the backup last year but won a quarterback battle in the fall and has been stellar.

The running back job is by committee with no dominant back. Junior Nathan Jung has a team high eight catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Thomas has gotten a good showing up front on both lines by senior Shey Newton. He has a team-high 20 tackles as does junior Apollo Thomas, the coach’s son.
