Mt. Baldy League football order to be decided on field

There won’t be any tie for any spot in the Mt. Baldy League when it comes to football thanks to the match-ups the final week.

It will be defending champion Colony (6-3, 4-0), ranked fifth in the Central Division, squaring off against Don Lugo (5-4, 4-0) on Friday for the top spot. The Titans are looking for their seventh title in the last 10 years while Don Lugo is looking for its first league title since winning back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004.

The Conquistadores will be without senior quarterback Dane Ford who sustained a broken collarbone. He is having surgery today.

Then there’s the battle for the other playoff spot as Alta Loma (4-6, 2-2) plays at Chaffey (7-2, 2-2) will be facing off for third place. Most thought it would be Chaffey providing the stiffest competition for Colony but that wasn’t the case as the Titans trounced the Tigers, ranked 10th in the Central Division, last week 43-0.

Much was expected of Chaffey this season but no one knew what was to come of Alta Loma because it is under a first-year coach in Mark Pasquarella. The playoff drought has been a long one for the Braves. They last qualified as an at-large team out of the Baseline in 2008.

Lastly there’s the battle to stay out of last place as Ontario (4-5, 0-4) plays at Montclair (4-5, 0-4). It’s probably appropriate those two are playing for that the last week because their paths this season have been quite similar. Both went 4-1 in non-league play doing so largely because they didn’t play a tough schedule early and have been exposed since starting league play.

But top to bottom the Mt. Baldy has come a long way.
