Colony boys water polo team having best season ever

It has already been a banner year for the Colony High School boys water polo team, coached by Mike Fernandez.

The Titans (19-8) dethroned Mt. Baldy League power Don Lugo, beating the Conquistadors twice by one goal each time during the regular season, one of those the going double overtime last match of league play.

But Colony isn’t content with simply a league title. The Titans will square off against defending Division 7 champion Rio Mesa in a semifinal game at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Mt. SAC.
The team had never won a league title, much less ventured this deep into the playoffs.

“We have just a found a way to get it done,” Fernandez said. “The kids have worked hard and they’re very focused.”

The marquee player for the Titans is senior Cristian Lopez who has 130 goals, 127 assists and 166 steals. Junior Edgar Cueva is the second-leading scorer at 87 goals, 72 assists and 113 steals. Among the other key contributors are Logan Frye and Quentin Williams, both seniors.

Senior Anthony Gutierrez has done a stellar job minding the net.

Colony isn’t the only local team still in the playoff picture. San Dimas will take on Jurupa Valley in the other Division 7 semifinal at 4:30 at Mt. SAC.

In Division 2, Damien will play defending CIF champion Foothill at Woolett Aquatic Center in Irvine.

In Division 5 it will be a battle of locals in a 7:30 p.m. seminal at Diamond Bar High as defending champion Claremont squares off against Webb at 7:30. That will be preceded by Redlands East Valley against La Serna at 5:30 p.m.
