Chino Hills football coach Matt Bechtel has resigned

After four years at Chino Hills, the last three as head football coach, Matt Bechtel has resigned.

Chino Hills Athletic Director Phil Garcia confirmed the resignation Wednesday morning.

Bechtel’s teams were 25-10 the last three years. The Huskies were second in the Baseline League in 2014, their first after moving over from the then-Sierra League.

This was a banner year for Chino Hills, which won the league and defeated both the league’s premier teams in Rancho Cucamonga and Upland. This was probably Bechtel’s best coaching job. He has no players with Division I offers on the table but beat a lot of teams loaded with top prospects.

The Huskies made it to the West Valley Division semifinal before losing to No. 1 Mission Viejo.

Bechtel was head coach at Colony in 2010 and 2011, then moved over to Chino Hills as offensive coordinator under Derek Bub. Bub then resigned and Bechtel took the head position in 2013.

Garcia says Bechtel met with his team early Wednesday.

“We’re definitely sorry to see him go,” Garcia said. “He did a great job here and we’re thankful for all he contributed.”

Here’s what Bechtel had to say an an e-mail about his resignation:

“I am extremely proud of the accomplishments that our student-athletes have achieved over the past three years, especially this season as we won the Baseline League Championship and advanced to the semi-finals in the very competitive West Valley Division. Without the hard work of the great men on my football staff as well as the dedication of our players none of these accomplishments would have been possible.

I am also very grateful for the enormous support that I received from the student body, fellow teachers and staff members, parents, and the Chino Hills community as a whole. It was both an honor and a privilege to serve as the leader of the football program for these past three years and observe how our philosophy of trust, courage, discipline, and brotherhood propelled our players to achieve success that many outside our program never thought possible. My decision to step down was definitely not an easy one as I’ve developed many lasting friendships over my four years at Chino Hills High School.

However, at this time it is in the best interest of my family and I that I step away from my coaching duties at Chino Hills. I am uncertain of what my next steps will be, but using the game of football to mentor young men is a major part of who I am. I wish Chino Hills Football much success and I have faith in whatever the future holds for me.” ”
