Damien lineman Liam Ryan commits to Washington State

Damien High School offensive lineman Liam Ryan is the latest in a line of local players committing to Washington State, doing so while on his visit this weekend.

“I went in there with a list of what I was looking for and they pretty much exceeded what I was looking for on everything,” he said.

Ryan, a 6-foot-6, 270-pounder, had 10 offers from which to choose.

He also made an official visit to Nevada and had unofficial trips to San Diego State, Arizona State, UCLA San Jose State and Fresno State, making multiple trips to the latter two.

He met with head coach Mike Leach and assistant coaches, as well as Athletic Director Bill Moos.

“That was the only place I met the athletic director and I appreciated that,” Ryan said. “I liked what he is trying to do with the athletic program.”

Washington State has been high on Ryan’s list all along so he has paid close attention to what the team was doing this season. He talked a but with Upland graduate Tyler Hilinski, one of the locals playing there, and exchanged text messages with current Upland Wide receiver Grant Porter who has also committed there.

Ryan took the trip with his parents and an uncle.

“I am relieved to ave made the decision. Now I can just focus on school and basketball,” said Ryan, part of the school’s state-title winning team in basketball in the spring.
