Bonita basketball standout Russell Hernandez chooses Cal Lutheran

Bonita High School basketball standout Russell Hernandez has decided to attend school and play basketball at Cal Lutheran.

Hernandez, a 5-foot-11 guard, helped the Bearcats (28-7) to a share of the Palomares League title and a berth in the Division 3AA CIF title game where they lost to Oak Park at the Honda Center.

Hernandez put the emphasis on academics and will be majoring in exercise science.

“Education comes first and they have good science programs,” he said. “I like that its not too close to home but close enough I can get back on weekends.”

Hernandez was also considering Division II Hawaii Pacific and Division III schools in Pacific (Ore.) and Pomona-Pitzer. He visited Pomona-Pitzer and Hawaii Pacific.

He was thrilled with the way his high school career played out.

“Of course it would have been nice to win that last one but it was all we could have hoped for and it was an unbelievable season,” he said.
