Upland track standout Kierra Davis signs with UC Davis

Upland High School track standout Kierra Davis wasn’t sold on UC Davis at first. The coach wanted her to run the 400 meters and she was more interested in focusing on the 100 and 200.

But the more she talked with the coaching staff, the more she was willing to hear what they had to say. A visit to the school last month also proved to be the turning point and she ended up signing with the NCAA Division I institution.

“They really wanted me and showed so much interest,” she said. “I went up there and I really liked it and thought it would be a great fit for me.”

Davis also had offers from UNLV, Sacramento State and Liberty (Va.) with UC Irvine also heavily pursuing her.

Another positive of picking UC Davis that she has a former teammate there in Mikaela Adolphus, who is just finishing her freshman year. The two have talked extensively and are looking forward to being teammates once again.

“That will definitely make it a lot more fun,” she said. “She was my host when I went for the visit and we had a great time.”

The Highlanders standout has emerged as one of Southern California’s top sprinters. She ranks ninth in the 200, her favorite event, with a best of 24.40 coming at the Baseline League finals. She is also 19th in the 100 with a best of 12.06.

Davis is also a key runner for the 4×100 relay that is currently ranked fourth with a best of 47.14 coming at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Davis plans to major in psychology or sociology.
