Upland Christian gets baseball playoff bid at last minute

Boys Republic was the fourth-place team out of the Arrowhead League in the Division 6 draw but injuries are preventing the school from fielding a team.

The league is allowed to replace Boys Republic in the bracket prior to the completion of the first-round of playoff but the fifth-place team, Riverside Christian, also declined to participate. That left the decision to the sixth-place team – Upland Christian, 5-14-1 overall and 4-9-1 in league play.

Athletic Director Mark Edgemon checked with first-year coach Brandon Daily and the team and they were eager for the opportunity. So they will play at Santa Paula at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Edgemon said he was notified at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The team hadn’t practice since its regular season ended a week ago. It will have two practices before the playoff game but still wanted the chance.

“It’s a young team and it will be a good experience for them,” Edgemon said. “If they weren’t up for it, we wouldn’t have said yes but they really wanted a chance to be in the playoffs.”
