Ron Haywood named boys basketball coach at Western Christian

Ron Haywood has been named head boys basketball coach at Western Christian.
Haywood served as an assistant to Eric Cooper last year at Diamond Ranch, which won a CIF Division 3-A title.

An old connection actually led him to the position. Rhyen Siemer, who had been Haywood’s assistant during his three-year tenure at Rancho Christian, had taken the girls basketball position. When the boys opening came up, he let Haywood know and encouraged him to think about it.

“It came at a good time. I was thinking about what I wanted to do the coming season,” he said. “I went and talked to them and I liked what they had to say.”

The fact that the team was just 1-42 over the last two years wasn’t enough to scare him off.

In fact, Haywood worked a summer clinic at the school and was encouraged by the players’ desire to get better.

“We got done and they wanted to keep playing,” he said. “They were excited about having someone that really wanted to invest the time in helping them get better. When I started out at Rancho Christian we had eight players and five were freshman. I am not afraid of having to build a program.”
