Rancho Cucamonga football quartet to play in two weeks

The Rancho Cucamonga football team is 5-0 and ranked fifth in Division 1. The Cougars have a bye this week before opening Baseline League play on Oct. 7 against Upland.

Football enthusiasts around Southern California are eager to see what happens when the four Corona Centennial transfers, via way of Upland, become eligible. That quartet consists of Sione Piutau, Semisi Pahulu, Liahona Pahulu and Siani Malere, two of who were probably starters at Centennial.

Cougars coach Nick Baiz said the quartet won’t be eligible to play against Upland, which would add to the drama of the already-heated rivalry. They would be eligible to play the following week, Oct. 14, against Los Osos.

They have been practicing but Baiz said it is too soon to know what role they will fill.

“They will be given an opportunity,” Baiz said. “But we have some pretty good players there already and they haven’t beaten anyone out yet.”
