Los Osos grad Kyle Robeniol headed to Utah

Los Osos graduate Kyle Robeniol thought he was going to spend his collegiate years in the Pac-12 playing for Oregon. But now he is headed to Utah, after a one-year stop at Orange Coast Community College.

Robeniol, a 5-foot-10 left-hander, graduated from Los Osos in 2015 where he was a first-team Baseline League and All-Inland Valley selection.

He went to Oregon and pitched 26 innings as a true freshman.

But the school had a coaching change and his scholarship got reduced significantly to where it was going to be too expensive to stay. So he was seeking other options.

He returned to Southern California and enrolled at Orange Coast where he will play this spring.

Utah hadn’t necessarily recruited him that hard out of high school but the past summer he played in the Great West League for the Medford, Ore. team which included a couple of players from Utah. They told their coach that Robeniol was looking to leave Oregon and recommended him.

Robeniol took a trip to Utah earlier this month. He also got a ringing endorsement of the school from former classmate Caleb Repp who plays football for the Utes.

“The campus was beautiful,” he said. “They share a facility with the Angels Triple-AAA team (in Salt Lake City) so that’s kind of cool. It was just a great opportunity.”

Robeniol will have two years of eligibility left. He is disappointed things didn’t work out at Oregon but taking the more optimistic approach.

“It was a little disheartening at first but I knew if I kept working hard and stayed positive, it would all work out,” he said. “
