Etiwanda boys tennis team looking to continue run in postseason

The Etiwanda boys tennis team has been one on the rise the past couple of years. Well the Eagles are officially here!

Etiwanda (16-2, overall, 9-1 league) shared the Baseline League title with Rancho Cucamonga, easily won a Southern Section Division 3 first round playoff match against Burbank earlier this week and will face Aliso Niguel in a second-rounder today.

Three years ago virtually the same team was 0-10 in league play.

It’s a young squad too, so the Eagles should be a force to reckon with next year as well.

“We were close last year but everything has come together this year,” says long-time coach Brent Lunt. “I thought this team had a good chance to get to the semifinals but I think we have the potential to make the finals if everyone plays their best.”

The team has a lot of depth with Lunt boasting four players he can rotate into the three singles slots – sophomore Eric Chang (27-6), juniors Sachin Reddi (37-12) and DeAndre Siringo-Ringo (33-10) and his sophomore brother Clyde (26-4).

The player that doesn’t compete in singles teams with freshman Dominic Estrada for one of the doubles teams. That player lately has been DeAndre who had relegated his role in singles to help the team which Lunt points to as evidence of his team’s unselfishness.

Victor Siapno and senior Ramiz Ahmed join forces at No. 1 doubles.

Should the Eagles advance, they would likely face second-seeded JSerra in the next round which would be a tough task. But Lunt doesn’t rule his team out.

“It would take everyone really stepping up, but they’re capable,” he said.
