Rancho Cucamonga’s Abby Venglass wins national track title

Rancho Cucamonga’s Abby Venglass is having a good summer vacation so far.

Venglass, who will be a sophomore in the fall, took first place in the girls 15-16  age group at the United States Youth Track and field Championships at Benedictine University just out side of Chicago.

Venglass will be competing in the shot put and discus later this week while brother Jordan, a freshman to be at Cal, will compete in the javelin.

Venglass turned in a personal best of 125 feet and five inches, that coming on her first throw of the final round to defeat the second-place competitor by nine feet.

It was just her second meet because the event is not contested at the high school level and girls can’t start competing in that event until they turn 15.

“I really didn’t know what to expect because it was only my second in hat event,” she said. “I have my routine for those other events that I have been competing in for a long time. But this was still kind of new.”

Venglass compete for the Cougars in the shot and discus the past spring. She was 13th in the discus at CIF finals, narrowly missing the master’s cut. She  was named the team’s Most Valuable Field Athlete.
