Ayala’s Joe Naranjo makes Under-17 National Baseball Team

Junior Joe Naranjo of Ayala High School is one of 40 players selected to the final 40-man roster for the 2017 17U National Team Development Program (NTDP).

The roster was unveiled today after the conclusion of the 17U National Team Championships in Arizona and Florida. The week-long 17U National Team Development Program will be held fromĀ July 12-29 in Chicago.

The National Team Development Program offers identified athletes an opportunity to connect with USA Baseball staff to better prepare for a future national team experience. The program includes skill development sessions, off-field education seminars and intra-squad games.

Naranjo, who has committed to Cal State Fullerton, was a first team Palomares League and All-Inland Valley selection and a second-team All-CIF selection this season as a sophomore.

Narano, a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, went 8-3 with an 0.64 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 15 appearances (76 innings).

Eight of the invited athletes have participated in the USA Baseball National Team Development Program previously, including two athletes returning to the 17U NTDP for the second consecutive year.

Players are selected for the National Team Development Program based on their participation and performance at USA Baseball events. Recommendations from professional scouts, USA Baseball task force members and collegiate, high school and youth coaches at USA Baseball events play a role in the selection process for the National Team Development Program.

Also among the players making the cut is Michael Carpentier of Citrus Valley.

Ayala’s Kyle Velazquez makes commitment to D1 St. Mary’s

Ayala High School junior shortstop Kyle Velazquez has committed to NCAA Division I St. Mary’s.

Velazquez hit .407 last year as a sophomore, starting on the varsity. He had eight doubles, 14 RBI, 19 runs scored and eight stolen bases in helping the Bulldogs to an 18-13 record and third-place finish in the tough Palomares League.

He visited the school last month and also made trips to USC, Arizona, Texas-Arlington, New Mexico and Cal Baptist. The decision came down to St. Mary’s and New Mexico.

“I really like the head coach. He’s a great guy,” Velazquez said. “And I really felt at home the minute I set foot on the campus.”

Velazquez, who plans to major in business, didn’t feel the need to wait and see if any other offers came along.

“This way the decision is done and it’s a lot less stress,” he said. “I can focus on keeping my academics up and working on my game.”

Palomares League boasts top-notch baseball

When it comes to high school sports in the Inland Valley, the Baseline gets the most attention. And rightfully so.

Not only is the champion of that league likely to make a pretty significant impact in the playoffs, so are the teams that finish second or third.

The biggest example of that is boys basketball where Damien, Etiwanda and Chino Hills all made deep playoff runs with Damien and Chino Hills also getting to STATE championship finals.

But when it comes to baseball, the Palomares League is better, at least this season. It’s a new league this season and it has an interesting mix of teams. You have two reigning league champions from last year in Glendora (Baseline) and Bonita (Hacienda).

And you have two teams that were second to those in Diamond Bar, which was just behind Bonita and South Hills, which finished a nudge behind Chino Hills in the Sierra.

Then there are Ayala and Claremont.

At one point this season four teams from the league were ranked in the CIF Division 2 poll. Bonita and Ayala faltered last week so South Hills (4) and Glendora (6) are the ones still holding strong in the latest poll released Monday.

South Hills went into first place today wit ha 4-2 win over Ayala. Both coaches Darren Murphy of South Hill and Chris Vogt of Ayala talked about how tough the league is and how at least one good team will be left out when it comes to the playoffs.

This year there are no at-large bids to a fourth-place finisher so it will be the top three advancing. Right now its Bonita the odd team out but there is a long way to go. There are sure to be some hard-fought, intense games the rest of the way.

Here’s what the coaches had to say after Wednesday’s game:
