Rancho Cucamonga employing transfer QB for second consecutive season

OS24-AMATDAMIEN-WL“One and done” doesn’t quite have the same connotation in the case of Rancho Cucamonga High School football as it does college basketball. But the Cougars are incorporating a senior transfer quarterback for the second straight season courtesy of Gage Pucci’s transfer from Damien.

Adam Friederichsen, a transfer from Carlsbad La Costa Canyon prior to last season, completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,849 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions before walking on at Arizona following his lone season at Rancho Cucamonga. Pucci’s numbers in two seasons as a starter at Damien don’t measure up, but the 5-foot-11, 195-pound rising senior will be surrounded by much more talent at Rancho Cucamonga, one of the best two or three programs in the Inland Valley.

As a junior at Damien, Pucci completed 47 percent of his passes for 1,498 yards with 15 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

“He’s learning the offense, picking it up pretty well,” Rancho Cucamonga coach Nick Baiz said. “He’s a leader. He’s a tough kid. I think our biggest issue will be if we can put together an offensive line that will keep him upright.”

Sunkist champ Summit loses transfer QB, gains transfer QB

Summit starting quarterback Jakob Jordan transferred to Eastvale Roosevelt in December, but it didn’t take the SkyHawks long to fill the void. The two-time defending Sunkist League champions will replace Jordan with Etiwanda transfer Keshon Flemmings.

Flemmings, who will be a junior in the fall, quarterbacked the Etiwanda junior varsity last season. He has turned in a great summer in passing league, according to Summit head coach Cesar Villalobos. Flemmings will certainly have plenty of talent at receiver this coming season in Washington commit Erik Brown and Jordan Washington, who has scholarship offers from Idaho and New Mexico State.

Upland football team could have eight transfers in fall

The Upland High School football program has attracted its share of transfers over the years, but it may reach new heights this season.

If all players who have transferred from other schools since last season are approved by the CIF-SS, the Highlanders could feature at least eight new faces in the fall.

That figure doesn’t include incoming freshman receiver Nathan Tilford, who received scholarship offers from USC and Arizona State while he was still in eighth grade.

“We work really hard at what we do and if people move in for whatever reason and we’re the benefactor, then I’m happy for that,” said Upland head coach Tim Salter, who is entering his 19th year. “We’re not out there recruiting kids, but I think we have one of the best programs around.”

Upland RB Payton ruled ineligible for 2013 due to athletically motivated transfer

San Dimas running back Jake Payton will be forced to sit out his senior season after a ruling today that his transfer to Upland was athletically motivated. The CIF-SS denied Payton’s transfer due to a violation of rule 510, according to its website.

forsaleThis is the second high profile football transfer in the Inland Valley to receive this ruling in the offseason. Payton can only hope to have more success in the appeals process than Diamond Bar transfer Antonio Hull. Originally, San Dimas planned not to challenge Payton’s transfer to Upland, but changed its tune this week.

“We had a change of heart, it’s a group decision,” Zernickow told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune on Monday. “My opinion is that you can’t say nothing if something happened.”

San Dimas challenging transfer of star RB Payton to Upland

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune’s Aram Tolegian is reporting that San Dimas will challenge the transfer of star running back Jake Payton to Upland on the grounds of athletic motivation. San Dimas originally said it wouldn’t challenge the transfer of the running back who had 1,658 yards and 22 touchdowns last season.

“We had a change of heart, it’s a group decision,” San Dimas football coach Bill Zernickow told the Tribune. “My opinion is that you can’t say nothing if something happened.”

Free agent Collison looking for NBA team where he can put down roots

For the first time in his NBA career, Darren Collison returned home to Southern California this summer in complete control of his own destiny.

Traded twice during his four seasons in the league, the Etiwanda High School graduate is a free agent following his lone season with the Dallas Mavericks.

The color of his uniform next season isn’t the only uncertainty for Collison, who is hosting his third annual summer camp Monday through Friday at Etiwanda. After stepping in for an injured Chris Paul his rookie season in New Orleans, Collison was a starting point guard until a late-season injury in Indiana last year. He came off the bench for the Pacers in last season’s playoffs and started 47 of 81 games this year after he was traded to the Mavericks in the offseason.

“There’s a lot of possibilities out there,” Collison said. “I think some teams see me as a starter and some see me as a bench player. I don’t really care. I just want to win an NBA championship.”

Video violates rule, disqualifies Los Osos long jumper at national meet

Kira Moreland Los OsosKira Moreland’s track season came to an unceremonious end on Saturday. Coming off a runner-up finish at the state track meet, the Los Osos senior posted the best mark at Saturday’s Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico on her first jump. Unfortunately, it was her last.

The Arizona State-bound Moreland (pictured above) was disqualified following her initial leap of 20 feet, 1/4 inch because her coach was taking video of Moreland, which is allowed in California but not in New Mexico. Without warning, a disqualification was issued to the senior whose season-best jump of 20 feet, 7 inches ranks her third in the country. A jump of 19 feet, 9 3/4 inches won Saturday’s meet, but it wasn’t first place that interested Moreland as much as her intentions to set a personal best of 21 feet.

“It was pretty devastating,” Moreland said. “It wasn’t about the (first-place) medal, it was more about not having the opportunity to keep jumping. He was pretty rude about it. He just came up to me and told me I was disqualified. It wasn’t like I did anything that disrupted or distracted any of the other jumpers. He could have just asked my coach to stop and let me continue, but I don’t think he wanted me to win.”

MLB draft: Los Osos’ Chris Kohler got inside info on his new organization

There were no Inland Valley baseball players drafted on Day 1 of the MLB first-year player draft.

But Day 2 saw three: Los Osos LHP Chris Kohler (third round supplemental, No. 106), Oakland A’s; Upland HS/Pepperdine RHP Scott Frazier (6th round, 168), Chicago Cubs; Diamond Bar HS/Riverside City College Kenny Mathews (7th round, 201), Cleveland Indians.

For Kohler, he was drafted by an organization he said he knew was very interested. He also had someone to talk to about that organization.

“I talked Daniel Robertson (from Upland High), who was drafted by the A’s in the supplemental first round last year. He told me all about the organization and how they do things. I’ve been playing with him with the ABD Bulldogs for a long time.”

Inland Valley goes 0 for 3 in CIF-SS baseball semifinals

forsale

Diamond Bar wasn’t alone. The Brahmas suffered the fate of the other two local baseball teams in Tuesday’s CIF-SS semifinals, falling a game short of playing for a championship. After Diamond Bar couldn’t convert a third-inning leadoff triple into a run, it was all downhill in a 10-2 loss to second-seeded Gardena Serra.

Though San Dimas avoided an Oaks Christian ace expected to be a first-round draft pick, the Saints fell to the No. 1 seed, 3-0. Division 2 No. 3 seed Los Osos went down in heartbreaking fashion, falling victim to a two-out single in the final inning of a 3-2 loss to second-seeded Temecula Valley. Ontario Christian, the final local baseball team standing, will play its Division 5 semifinal today after the game was delayed due to Oak Hills’ graduation.
