Loss in title game doesn’t spoil season for Chaffey baseball team

Someone forgot to tell the Chaffey High School baseball team you’re supposed to be a little nervous when your school is making its first appearance in a championship game in nearly 50 years.

The Tigers lost one of the most hard-fought title games in recent memory on Saturday night, coming up short against Anaheim Katella 3-0 in 11 innings at UC Riverside.

But from the first pitch coach Max Pinedo’s team played like it belonged. The problem was so did the other team.

In the game before Chaffey’s, Righetti lost the title game in Division 3 to Walnut 14-2.  Maye a loss like that is easier to take because it is obvious you’re not the better team so no matter how you would have played, your chance of winning wasn’t good.

Lose a tough one like that and you’re thinking of every little play that might have made the difference between winning and losing.

It was one great defensive play after another that kept the game scoreless through 10 innings. Chaffey third baseman Sergio Garcia made no fewer than four spectacular plays, in addition to a few tough ones.

A game of inches? Yes it is. In the sixth of a scoreless game Chaffey had a man on second and two outs. Garcia then roped a ball down the left field line that would have easily scored the runner. It was foul by inches. He struck out on the next pitch.

In the ninth with one out and a runner on second Lawrence Castaneda, who pitched seven scoreless innings on the mound and then moved to shortstop, came up with one out and a runner on second and hit a ball that sliced down the right field line, falling foul by a couple of feet. He ended up flying out to center.

The Tigers played so well it’s a shame an error to start the 11th paved the way for three unearned runs which proved their downfall.

So the Tigers, who finished with a nice 20-6-1 record, flinched first. But they still walk away with their first Mt. Baldy League title since 1995 and a first championship game appearance since 1971.

It was a tough post-game for the Tigers who had trouble holding back tears. But it was a valiant effort and one of which they, the school, the district and the Inland Valley can be proud.

Here is the link to the game story from that contest in case you missed it.

Chaffey baseball team in the hunt for Mt. Baldy League title

Chaffey High School baseball coach Max Pinedo thought he had a team with potential when he took over three years ago. But he had a young team laden with sophomores and a few freshmen.

Well those players are veterans now and Pinedo is looking for his team to do something it hasn’t done in a very long time – win a Mt. Baldy League title.

Knocking defending champion Don Lugo off the throne won’t be easy but the Tigers will give it a shot. The teams have played once and that game ended in a scoreless tie because of the poor weather conditions. The next showdown will be April 25 at Don Lugo.

Chaffey has two games next week against local rival Ontario first though.

“We always had high expectations we were just a little young,” Pinedo said. “The kids have matured a lot in the last couple of years and now we’re looking to make a run.”

The Tigers (10-3-1, 5-1-1) were fourth in the league last year but can equal their overall and league win totals of last year with just one more victory.

Pinedo says he also has a close-knit group of players that has been together for several years so that bond has proven beneficial as well.

Senior Lawrence Castaneda (3-0, 1.29) and junior Rhese Gomez (3-1, 1.96) are the top two starting pitchers. Gomez, who has committed to Nevada-Reno, also plays outfield when not on the mound while Castaneda plays shortstop.

Junior Jeremiah Duran has also logged some time on the mound.

Pinedo also singles out the play of leadoff hitter and middle infielder Justin Martinez as well as Zachary Ehrhardt, both seniors.

He adds that Ehrhardt’s play is indicative of the mentality of the rest of the team.

“He just does all the little things,” Pinedo said. “He is completely selfless. He doesn’t care about his numbers. It is about what he can do to help the team.”

Chaffey’s league loss came to Alta Loma, a team Pinedo is high on despite it’s record.

Chaffey’s nonleague losses were to Baseline schools Upland and Etiwanda with the loss to the Eagles coming in the championship game of the Cougar Classic at Rancho Cucamonga.

“It was good to play those schools,” he said, “We like seeing that kind of competition because it only helps you.”

Chaffey’s Rhese Gomez choses Nevada-Reno

Chaffey baseball standout Rhese Gomez has made a verbal commitment today to NCAA Division 1 Nevada-Reno.

Gomez, a junior pitcher and outfielder, made the decision official today. He visited the school in August and also had an unofficial trip to Arizona his freshman year. UC Riverside had also been showing a lot of interest.

“It’s a beautiful school and a beautiful campus,” he said. “It’s an up and coming program with a young coach that know what he’s doing. It’s in a great conference too so it seemed like a good fit.”

Gomez was a second-team All-Mt. Baldy selection last spring as a sophomore. He hit .281 in 21 games and did not make a fielding error.

An injury limited him to playing the outfield until the end of league play. He was 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA in three appearances when he finally did get to pitch.

Gomez has not decided on a major.
