Claremont soccer star Sophie Jones commits to Arizona

Claremont sophomore soccer standout Sophie Jones made a verbal commitment to the University of Arizona over the weekend.

She has always wanted to play in the Pac-12 so when that school offered, she saw no need to look elsewhere.

Jones  visited the school before the season started and also took an unofficial trip to Long Beach State. She also had some discussions with UCLA.

“I always wanted to play in the Pac-12 and it’s a place I think I can go in there and play right away. I really don’t want to red-shirt.”

Jones said one of the reasons she didn’t consider UCLA a little more thoroughly is the caliber of players there, many in the Olympic pool, would make it harder to get on the field soon.

She also liked what she saw with the University of Arizona located in Tucson.

“I like how the university there is the center of everything,” she said. “They really make it special to be a student-athlete there I think it will be a lot of fun.”

Jones said she really didn’t want to wait to see what other offers might come her way because spots at the premier schools fill up quickly. Since she saw a school she liked she saw no need to wait.

Jones was the leading scorer for the Wolfpack (25-4-2) last season with 23 goals and 10 assists, helping her team to the Division 3 Southern Section title game as well as a berth in the Southern California Regional final. She was a first-team All-CIF selection.

One of her goals came in the closing seconds of the Southern California regional final against Our Lady of Peace and sent the Wolfpack into the So Cal championship game.

Claremont girls soccer team to play without top player in title game

The Claremont girls soccer team will play for the CIF title at noon on Saturday at Warren High School in Downey against No. 2 South Torrance. But they will do so without their top player.

The Wolfpack (23-2-2) come into the contest with some momentum, having knocked off top seed Bishop Amat 1-0 in the semifinal. But in that contest leading scorer Sophie Jones was red-carded so the sophomore standout must sit this one out.

Tracey said he checked out all avenues of appeal but knew the chances of having that overturned were slim so the team is pressing onward.

“It shouldn’t even have been a foul,” he said, of the play that sidelined his top player. “We have a lot of depth and a lot of players that can score so I still like our chances.”

Jones tallied 21 goals and 10 assists for 52 points, more than twice that of the second-leading scorer. Sophomore Janelle Gutierrez is second on the team in points with 24 on eight assists and eight goals. Junior Elisabeth Chua is third in scoring with seven goals and seven assists.

Senior Mackenzie Boulware is fourth in scoring at 17 points. She had the lone goal in the win over Bishop Amat.

The Wolfpack, winners of the Palomares League, have registered 14 assists with junior Allison Bifone in the net for most of those. Junior Hope Hyland has also been an integral player in the backfield.

South Torrance (18-1-2), the Pioneer League winner, is the second seed. The Spartans advanced to the final with a 5-2 win over Flintridge Prep. They have won 13 straight games since settling for a 1-1 tie with Marymount in December.

Claremont last appeared in the CIF title game in 2012 and it beat Bishop Amat 2-0.

South Torrance was Division 4 champion in 2014.

General admission for the contest is $10 with students (with ID) and cildren getting in for $5.

Clarermont girls soccer team to face off with No. 1 Bishop Amat

Claremont is the lone local team left in girls soccer.

The Wolfpack (22-2-2) will play their Division 3 semifinal at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bishop Amat (24-3) which is the top seed and top finisher out of the Del Reyt League.

The school has been to the championship match once, that coming in 2012 when they lost to that same Bishop Amat.

Tim Tracey has headed the Claremont program the last 16 years.

“They’re the favorite so the pressure really isn’t on us,” he said. “Our girts are ready but they’re a good team so we will have to play our best.”

The Wolfpack are led by sophomore Sophie Jones who has 21 goals and 10 assists this season.

There is a lot of balance after that. Janelle Gutierrez, also a sophomore has eight goals and eight assists.

Tracey said this team has also prided itself on defense. The team has 14 shutouts with junior Allison Bifone getting the majority of the playing time in net with the other keeper being junior Hollyn Carlton.

He also singled out the defensive unit that also includes senior Katie Weaver and juniors Hope Hyland, Kyra Tisopulos, Zenani Dennis and Oksana Sosnovsky.

That defense will see its stiffest test of the season as the Lancers have  two players in Sophia Serafin and Nayeli Diaz who have combined for 57 goals.

The winner of the contest will play for the title against the winner of the other semifinal pitting South Torrance against Flintridge Prep.
