Claremont is looking for a girls volleyball coach – again!

Daniel Reighter has stepped down because of the time demands of a new job in the private sector. His successor will be the school’s seventh coach in as many years.

It was not an easy decision.

“When I came here I heard horror stories about what a tough place this was to coach,” he said.”But I had great kids, great parents. I really loved coaching here but this is the one time the adult me had to take over and I had to put the hobby to the side.”

Reighter helped lead the Wolfpack to a 23-9 showing that included a share of the school’s first league title in 19 years. The team advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 4 semifinals before falling to Sierra Canyon and made it to the Southern California Regional final in the state portion of the playoffs for Division II.

Reighter added that the decision was even because of the strong core of players that is returning, That group is led by Emilee Rohrer and Kylie Robinson who had committed to USC and Oregon respectively. Libero Bel Grabowski is returning and Reighter also singled out the progress of senior to be Paris Pearson.

“I was really excited about the coming season,” he said. “It’s one of those things if I were single I probably would have made a different decision but I really couldn’t afford not to take it.”

Reighter will be leading a subdivision of Atkor International, a global manufacturing company.

He still plans to remain active in volleyball though as a coach in the Pacific Junior Club program because it requires just three days a week and two of those are weekend days.

He also says he’ll try and come to a few Claremont matches as time permits to support his former players.

Claremont volleyball team claims share of Palomares League title

The Claremont volleyball team registered a 3-2 (20-25, 26-24,25-21, 20-25,15-12) win over Glendora tonight to snag a share of the Palomares League title.
Senior Simone Bliss tallied 18 kills and 22 digs while junior Emilee Rohrer added 17 kills. Junior libero Bel  Grabowski  anchored the defense with 25 digs.
Coach Daniel Reighter used two setters and both were effective as senior Merisa Marquez managed 29 assists and senior Kylie Robinson added 27 assists. Marquez started the season as the third string setter but moved up on the depth chart after Kira Butz sustained a season-ending dislocated shoulder.  Her emergence had Reighter rethinking his strategy of going from a 6-2 offense to a 5-1.
No one is quite sure the last time Claremont has won a league title in volleyball but Reighter believes it is close to two decades.
Reighter, the team’s sixth coach in as many years, said the key has been communication. The Wolfpack (16-7, 9-1) got off to a slow start but hit their stride the second round of league play.
“It’s been all about communication,” he said. “The girls are identifying a problem, talking about the problem and finding a way to fix it. We struggled with that early.”
Reighter said the turning point of the season came after the first match against Glendora which his team lost 3-0.
The next day at practice he started the afternoon with a one-hour team meeting to clear the air.
“We got everything out in the open. Whether it was a problem somebody had with someone else or a question on what we were defensively. We addressed every isse and got it out on the table in a respectful manner.”
Marissa Montoya had 19 kills and fie aces from Glendora (22-4, 9-1) in the losing effort.  Alex Lowden added 14 kills and 24 digs and Emma Svagdis had 13.

Claremont’s Emilee Rohrer makes verbal commitment to USC

Claremont High School volleyball standout Emilee Rohrer grew up a UCLA fan and most of the members of her family her Bruins fans as well.

But the 6-foot-2 sophomore outside hitter went in another direction when deciding where she wants to go to college, making a verbal commitment to USC over the weekend.

“I have been a diehard UCLA fan all my life and always wanted to go there. USC was just an option,” she said. “Then I went to visit USC and I was really blown away. I loved the campus, the coaches were so nice. I loved everything it had to offer.”

Rohrer had a stellar freshman campaign last fall for the Wolfpack, tallying 242 kills and registering a hitting percentage of .303.

She is also a versatile player as evidenced by 146 digs, 22 aces and 15 blocks.

She was a first team Palomares League selection and was chosen the Daily Bulletin’s Newcomer of the Year. More impressive was her selection to USA Volleyball’s A1 Select team made up from top players throughout the country.

She made several other unofficial visits as well, making those to UCLA, Pepperdine, Minnesota, and Washington. The offer came from USC in May.

“I really took my time and thought about the decision,” she said. “It really has kind of taken a weight off my shoulders so I can concentrate on having a great season.”

Rohrer plans to major in occupational therapy.

Mark Mina named head girls’ volleyball coach at Claremont

Mark Mina has been named volleyball coach at Claremont, athletic director Rick Dutton confirmed.

Mina will be the third coach in as many years and inherits a good nucleus of players as the team’s top two players last year were freshmen in Emilee Rohrer and Kylie Robinson.

He is no unfamiliar with the program, having served as junior varsity coach in 2014. He also took over the varsity program on an interim basis late in the season when coach Jodi Postlmayr stepped down to take and athletic director position.

Claremont is coming off a 21-11 season that included a second-place finish in the Palomares league (8-2) behind Glendora.

“There definitely is some young talent so we should be pretty good for the next few years,” Mina said. “I enjoyed working with junior varsity team there and I’m familiar with the girls coming back so it should be a smooth transition.”

Mina was the head coach at Rim of the World in 2013. Before that he spent four years directing the program at Immaculate Heart. He has also directed the programs at Mayfield and La Salle.

He also serves as director of Los Angeles Volleyball Academy East which will be run out of Cal Poly Pomona.
