Rancho Cucamonga’s Tayari Venable picks San Diego State

Rancho Cucamonga defensive back Tayari Venable admits he might have jumped the gun a bit when he committed to Washington State before his junior year.

After de-comitting from that school back in September Venable has decided San Diego State is where he wants to play college football.

He committed to that school upon his visit there the past weekend.

Venable, a 6-foot, 180-pounder, said he started reconsidering when other schools started contacting him, even after his original commitment. He never actually visited Washington State.

“I think I committed too early without really thinking about all my options,” he said. “I thought this was a better fit for me. It was about the schemes they play defensively and the education. The first day I was there we talked more about the education part and I liked that.”

Venable, who helped the Cougars to a 12-1 showing and berth in the CIF Division I semifinal, had 12 offers with Oregon State and Nevada pursuing him most after his de-commitment.

He will be following teammate Darren Hall to San Diego State. He committed to the Aztecs in the winter. Having a teammate there was a definite factor.

“That was definitely part of it,” he said. “It will be nice having someone there that I know. He can push me and I will push him.”

Venable plans to major in psychology.

Rancho Cucamonga defender Darren Hall chooses San Diego State

Rancho Cucamonga defensive back Darren Hall has committed to San Diego State, choosing that school from among 13 Division I offers.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder played sparingly last year, getting into games late when opposing teams were in passing situations but his stock rose over the spring and summer.

He was a first-team All-Baseline League selection the past season, recording 47 tackles, a recovered fumble and a forced fumble.

“I worked hard,” he said. “Even though I wasn’t a starter I was working like I was and I just tried to keep that mentality and stay positive.”

Hall attended a Rivals camp in Fullerton and a Nike Opening camp in Redondo . The Cougars’ showing this year helped as well.

With defensive backs Jaylon Redd and Thomas Graham seeing so much time on the offensive side of the ball Hall got more of a chance to shine and he delivered given the opportunity.

He made official visits to Nevada, Utah and Colorado. He took an unofficial trip to San Diego State but plans to go back there on an official visit next month.

A lot of factors helped him narrow down his list of choices.

“I looked at places I could see myself being, schools where the coaching staffs had been there awhile and one that were the best for my academic interest,” said Hall, who plans to major in communications.
