Etiwanda’s Kamari Pleasant backs off Arizona State commitment

Etiwanda defensive back Kamari Pleasant has de-commited from Arizona State and is now looking at other options.

Kamari Pleasant

Pleasant won’t be wasting any time making up his mind though. He said he plans to announce his decision on Thursday and it will be between USC, Oregon and Washington, all of which he has already visited.

It all came down to a numbers game. The Sun Devils got commitments from some other safeties, pushing Pleasant down on their list – or so he thinks.

“It all came down to how they wanted to use me and when they wanted me to enroll,” he said. “They were signing five DBs and already had three and said I might have to gray shirt  if they got some others.”

Pleasant made that decision today. He contacted  Arizona State to let them know of his decision, then contacted other schools to let them know he was still available.

Pleasant, a first-team All-Baseline League selection had eight offers from which to choose when he made the decision for the first time.

Baseline League once again to be hotly contested

Non-league games are over. The race for league titles is on and again it is the Baseline League with numerous compelling match-ups looming.

Damien and Los Osos were the bottom two teams a year ago and both of those have shown much improvement over the course of the non-league season. Damien has RB Dylan Thigpen upon who they rely while the Grizzles have a couple of Division I signees in LB Bryce Youngquist (Oklahoma) and OL Cohl Cabral (Arizona State).

Los Osos has also come up on the winning end of some close games so they seem poised when it matters.

Have those teams improved enough to actually contend? They are probably going to be hard-pressed to do so but they’re god enough to pull an upset that could throw a monkey wrench into some team’s title hopes.

The top team a year ago was Upland but the Highlanders graduated a majority of their starters including nine who advanced to Division II schools. Is Upland as good as in years past? Only time will tell. But if the Highlanders are going to repeat, it will take big contributions from those who weren’t the headline performers a year ago.

Rancho Cucamonga is the team with the most returning starters with that group including quarterback Angel Matute, running back Aaron Manning and DB Jaylon Redd. The Cougars also added a top-notch DB in Thomas Graham, who has committed to USC.

Chino Hills the most formidable test for Upland a year ago and looks like it too poised to challenge. The Huskies had newcomer at QB in Caleb Arreola. He was banged up in the Huskies win two weeks ago. His backup is already out for the season, so much of the Huskies hopes hinge on his health and development.

Just where does Etiwanda fit in? The Eagles wee a disappointing fourth a year ago and they have a new and energetic coach in Kevin Davis. The got off to a tough start this season but stayed the course and have momentum going into league play. They face Upland tonight so we’ll see right away what Etiwanda is made of.

The battle for the top spot could take place the last week of the regular season when Upland and Rancho square off. But no doubt, every battle is going to be a big one.

Versatile Kamari Pleasant of Etiwanda gets another D1 offer

Etiwanda High School senior Kamari Pleasant has excelled on both sides of the ball. But heading into this season he looked to destined to play safety in college. Well, not so fast.

Pleasant, a 6-foot-2, 185-pounder, is starting to get some attention as a wide receiver. Now he’s not being recruited as one or the other. He’s getting that proverbial tag “Athlete.”

That will should give him more options moving forward.

He has three offers – UTEP, Montana State and Oregon, with the latter coming as recently as Sunday.

“I have had a good season catching the ball and I’m getting some numbers there,” Pleasant said of the recent attention focused on him, “I am happy about that because ti gives me more options.”

Pleasant says he doesn’t prefer one over the other. He’ll do what ever gets him on the field faster.

He is actually the team’s leading rusher with 42 carries for 301 yards and two touchdowns. He has five receptions with one touchdown and has an interception on defense.

He is keeping his options open for now. He will take a visit to UCLA this weekend and one to USC the following week but those will both be unofficial. He hasn’t settled on any official trips.

The Eagles (2-3) are off the week and will start Baseline League play the following week against Upland.

Etiwanda QB Andrew Kanatsky expected back in lineup this week

Etiwanda senior quarterback Andrew Kanatsky missed last week’s game against Riverside Poly because of a concussion sustained in the fourth quarter the previous week against Summit. But he is cleared and will return this week as the Eagles (1-2) take on Oak Hills (1-2).

Junior Evan Gutierrez filled in admirably last week and led the Eagles to a win. He ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 44-yard touchdown pass.

Coach Kevin Davis says he liked what he saw out of Gutierrez and may throw a wrinkle into the offense to utilize his skills.

Etiwanda football team trying to remain optimistic amid struggles

We’ll know a lot about what the Etiwanda football team is made of this week.

In recent years the Eagles have underachieved given the talent most concede is on the team. The school made a coaching change during the off-season bringing in Kevin Davis, previously the offensive coordinator for Colony which won a CIF title last year.

But the Eagles have started out the season 0-2 with an ugly opening week loss to Norco 66-13, then Friday’s 48-35 loss to local rival Summit.

It won’t get any easier. This week the Eagles play Riverside Poly which barely lost a CIF final last year to Redlands East Valley.

Making matters worse, the Eagles will be without senior quarterback Andrew Kanatsky who sustained a concussion late in the fourth quarter against Summit when he was hit late.

Despite the early setbacks Davis is still optimistic.

“I still think we’re headed in the right direction, I really do,” Davis said. “We go back and watch the film and we’re right there. We’re in position to make plays and that’s the big thing.”

Davis said Evan Gutierrez, normally a wide receiver, will replace Kanatsky this week. He played a little quarterback last year although it was minimal time at that position. The other options have not played even one varsity down at the position.

Davis insists his team hasn’t lost faith.

“I don’t get that vibe,” he said. “It’s a new staff, a new offense and defense and we’re just in a learning process. Sometimes it takes longer than you want it to take.”

Davis singled out the performances last week of wide receiver Noah Gutierrez, the versatile Kamari Pleasant as well as Kanatsky, who he expects to be available in two weeks.

The good news that Riverside Poly was senior-laden last year so it is in rebuilding mode as well.

“It might be a good thing that we’re getting them early,” Davis said. “They’re a good team but they have a lot of newer guys.”

Etiwanda football team looks to recover from tough start

It was a tough debut for Etiwanda football coach Kevin Davis.

The Eagles were completely throttled by a quality Norco team 66-13. The good news is that’s only one game and Davis thinks his team will learn from its mistakes which were many.

The Eagles need to regroup in a hurry though. Looming on Friday is the “Fight for 15” rivalry game against Summit at Miller High School.

Davis is still optimistic though.

“The good thing is that there was no finer-pointing. Everyone took ownership for their own mistakes. In the past there might have been some of that and bickering on the sidelines. But everyone came in the next day on time and ready to go.”

Davis says his team went in confident but not necessarily overconfident or cocky.

It was just a matter of things steamrolling out of control. There were seven turnovers, beginning with the opening kickoff.

Davis is also glad to have a game in hand to iron out the problem spots where as Summit was idle last week.

“Having one last week will probably help us more than not having one will hurt them,” he said.

With Summit boasting several Division I players, most notably RB Stephen Carr, a USC commit, and DB Damian Alloway, the Eagles will again have their hands full. Their showing this week will be a great indicator as to whether this team can live up to expectations or it will be like those in the past who have underachieved.

Etiwanda football team looking to challenge in tough Baseline

Coaches who talk about winning a league title a year after finishing fourth usually come off as a little TOO optimistic.

New Etiwanda coach Kevin Davis is in that position this year. But unlike most, the Eagles loom as a legitimate threat. Most agree the Eagles had more talent last year than any other team besides Upland. So yes they underachieved in finishing fourth with a 4-5-1 overall record.

Etiwanda, Summit set up football rivalry

“The biggest thing will be learning to close out games,” said Davis, who comes over after two years as offensive coordinator at Colony. “There were a lot of games here last year that could have gone either way.”

The Baseline League will be as tough as ever. Yes there is defending champion Upland, traditional challenger Rancho Cucamonga and Chino Hills which made quite the splash last year, its first in the league.

Damien and Los Osos, the bottom two finishers last year, also look much improved.

“We’re going in there with a goal of winning the league title,” Davis said. “We definitely have the talent. There are a lot of good teams in this league but we really believe in what we have.”

Leading a large group of returning players is senior defensive back Treyjohn Butler, who has more than a dozen offers from Division I schools. His presence is one reason Davis singles out his secondary as the Eagles most solid position.

Other key returners on defense are safeties Kamari Pleasant and Kendall Greer, middle linebacker Aidan Anderson, linebacker-end Kendell Jordan and defensive end Nate Neal, who will also play some tight end.

Quarterback Andrew Kanatsky heads the returners on offense and stand to be the big beneficiary in the arrival of Davis as head coach.

Joining Kanatsky as key returnees on offense are brothers Evan and Noah Gutierrez who will figure into the passing game, as well as senior center Kyle Bagnall and running back-wide receiver Kempson Pearce.

Among the significant newcomers are wide receiver Josh Keith, a speedster who has come over from Summit, as well as junior offensive lineman Chris Bradberry (6-6, 350 pounds), a transfer from Rancho Cucamonga.

Sophomore running back Lawrence Starks, who played on the freshman team, last year, is also expected to be a big contributor.

“The biggest factor for us will be how quickly the kids adapt to a new offense and new defense,” Davis said. “That’s one of those things you never know how long it is going to take.”

The curtain comes up on the new season Aug. 28 when Etiwanda challenges Norco.

Etiwanda, Summit to start traveling trophy rivalry game

Etiwanda and Summit High Schools are separated by just 3.53 miles. So it only makes sense that the Eagles and SkyHawks play for more than just bragging rights.

Starting this year they will. All the details are being ironed out but the Sept. 4 game will be called the “Fight for 15,” or some variation thereof. It is in reference to the fact that the two are opposite sides of that particular freeway.

Etiwanda coach Kevin Davis, who came over after two years as offensive coordinator at Colony, graduated from Etiwanda in 1997. He also previously served as assistant there and remembers talk about establishing such a game back then.

So one of the first things he did upon getting the head job was calling Summit counterpart Nick Matheny and asking his opinion on the matter. As expected, Matheny was on board. It didn’t take much to rally support for the idea from the administration at both schools.

Both schools have used A.B. Miller as a home field and Summit still does so the game will be played there.

“I took it to my guys and they really loved the idea,” Davis said. “The schools are so close the kids all know each other. Everyone loves rivalry games so why not do it?”

Last year the teams played to a 6-6 tie, the game cut short prematurely by a power failure early in the fourth quarter.

“After that game it seemed like the perfect time to start it,” Davis said.

“Last year I surprised at just how big that game was,” Matheny said. “It was a great atmosphere. The kids all know each other and the schools are close so it is a game we should keep playing.”

It will be the second game of the season for Etiwanda which opens the season against Norco on Aug. 28. It will be the opener for Summit which plays a scrimmage against Jurupa Valley, also on Aug. 28.
