Claremont softball player Katrina Merrick signs with Ferris State

Claremont High School softball standout Katrina Merrick is a native Californian and loves the beach. So the last thing she could have imagined was going to a cold weather climate to play softball – but she is.

Merrick signed a letter of intent with NCAA Division II Ferris State (Mich.) today. She even took her official visit in February when it is still cold there.

“People can’t believe I’m going there,” she said. “But I really feel like I need to get away and become more independent. I think I can go there and really mature.”

Merrick, who plays first base and third base, met Ferris State coach Wally King at a showcase in which her travel ball team was competing.

“He (King) was looking for someone that can really hit the ball and that’s what I do best,” she said.

She was also considering Hiram College (Ohio) as well as Division III Whittier. She plans to major in psychology or criminal justice.

Merrick has helped the Wolfpack to a 12-4 record.

Ferris State, located in Big Rapids, Mich., is currently 28-16 overall and 13-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
