Rancho Cucamonga athlete makes college decision

Senior volleyball standout Kyriaki Tsigkounis of Rancho Cucamonga High School has committed to NCAA Division III Whittier College.

Last season Tsigkounis registered 128 kills, 107 digs and 133 assists for the Cougars who were second in the Baseline League behind Chino Hills.

Tsigkounis will get plenty of opportunities to play in front of friends and family. Whittier competes in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference along with locals University of La Verne, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer.

She was also considering Occidental, another school that plays in that conference.

“When I went there I fell in love with the school,” says Tsigkounis, who carries a 4.0 grade point average. “I really liked the coaches and the team.”

Tsigkounis said she also considered going to college and just focusing on academics but wasn’t quite ready to end her competitive career.

“I really love the sport and I knew I would really miss it,” she said.

Last season the Whittier Poets went 8-17 overall and 6-10 in SCIAC play, placing sixth of nine teams in the conference.
